Small betrayals among friends
In politics, there is always someone traitor. It is never ad hominem, eager to swear all the traitors in explaining arguments forcefully that their act is primarily policy, only politics and nothing but politics. C'mon!
In so-called democratic and civilized, we almost always betrayed by opportunism. Take advantage of circumstances, a little compromise on the principles are just the basics of politics. The thing is perfectly commonplace and usually causes a nod heard. "You will perhaps be accused of opportunism. Yet it hides a real political barbarism," said Leon Gambetta.
The opportunist is an animal that aggregates the majority of the time, which has other opinion than that of the dominant party, which is the minion of power or the client, even get promoted and favors. That majorities come and go, that the parties alternate in power more or less, that the nature or the power structure itself are subject to change, the opportunist does not care: it changes with them, that's all: tempora mutantur and our mutamur in illis.
In Lebanon, supposedly democratic and supposedly civilized, except when removed its opposition with a car bomb or they were cut with an ax, it also betrays happily elsewhere. Some have made their mark as Walid Jumblatt, a specialist stab in the back. Others, and they are legion, often by ambition. Michel Aoun is the figurehead. His obsession, mad, destructive devour. She led all denials and not be consumed with him. Poor Iznogoud!
But these two great figures of treason should not make us forget the small fry. It would be tedious to enumerate them all, but if we reviewed the entire herd policy, few people have done nothing wrong and there always find a bit by scanning a small task on their foreheads. We always talk politics, is not it?
This record of shame is not confined to one camp, far away, but sometimes you pay more attention to defectors who grabbed headlines (Jumblatt, Mikati, Safadi Fattouch ..) without dwelling on those who have been betrayed. This is normal, since they are considered as victims and we are more inclined to bemoan their fate as the blame. But are they really as white as they claim?
Saad Hariri is the exemplary case. This sweet lamb is presented to us today as the propitiation of a dark conspiracy. He is the man who had the courage to say no at the last minute and that has somehow resisted a campaign of rare ferocity dictatorship led by a generator of chaos and death by an armed party, past master of extortion and robberies.
But what is easy to forget to emphasize is that this great booby, now transformed into a hero, had already surrendered on three main points that had been protracted negotiations between Syria and Saudi Arabia. He acted on his own, obeyed the orders of his Saudi sponsor or yielded to pressure from Syrian gangster, the result is the same. In a word, Saad Hariri has betrayed him too. His last minute refusal had nothing to do with the principles for which he fought, but rather was motivated by some minor advantages that his enemies were supposed to give him in return before retracting. Get everything without giving up anything is the Syrian method of choice. Only fools continue to be surprised, beginning with the Saudi king who does not even have enough time to get bite your fingers. Good luck!
Bashar Hassan and wanted butter, silver butter, milk, eggs, cows and chickens. Absolutely everything and nothing in return. Saad Hariri can go whine quietly in the bosom of his king fossil that has betrayed in turn by giving the green light to the appointment of Miqati. Maybe he will learn with age what the price of stupidity.
